Hamptons Coastal Style Decor and How to Incorporate It In Your Space!

design by Mark D. Sikes

If you’ve ever visited the Hamptons, a stretch of beach communities in New York, you are probably familiar with the bright, light design style that dominates much of the homes in the area. The design style of the Hamptons has spread far outside of Long Island and is now a popular look for homes both close and far away from the beach!

What is Hamptons style decor?

Think of Hamptons style as an upgraded version of your typical beach house decor. The main goal of Hamptons style is to make your home feel breezy, bright, and comforting after a long day spent in the sand. Hamptons style can also be considered as elegant and calm with whitewashed furniture and walls, pops of sea-inspired colors, and interesting patterns. It’s no secret that Hamptons style decor has grown in popularity over the years across the globe because of its elevated, relaxed style that makes you feel like you’re at the beach every single day! The Hamptons style decor is perfect for people who want to make their homes feel connected with nature without overdoing it. Crisp, bright, and classic is the perfect way to sum up this popular design style.

How to incorporate Hamptons style decor in your home

design by Mark D. Sikes

Ready to design your space to feel like the beach house of your dreams? Make sure to follow these Hamptons style must-haves when planning out your home!

1. Colors

The color palette of the Hamptons style is probably the most noticeable part of this interior design style. Because the goal is to bring the openness of the beach into your home, you want to focus on a color palette that mimics the elements of the beach. Think seafoam greens, bright whites, toned-down yellows, cool blues, muted tans, and light browns. All of these colors bring the feeling of the sea, sand, and sun right into the comfort of your own home. Typically, many Hamptons style enthusiasts will keep their walls white and then incorporate the color with home decor, area rugs, and patterned fabrics. This keeps the space feeling open and airy while also adding in those elements of nature. You can also feel free to add pops of red and orange to mimic coral and seashells!

2. Patterns

Patterns are almost just as important as your color palette when designing a Hamptons style home. This design style favors patterns that are bold yet muted with those aforementioned colors inspired by nature. Stripes, florals, Delft, checkers, and gingham can all be used as an interesting pop of bold pattern against an otherwise white background. Just remember when choosing patterns, the goal of Hamptons style is to be elegant yet calm so don’t overdo it. Instead, thoughtfully plan out how you want to show off your favorite pattern pops.

3. Space

If you’re planning a major home overhaul, make sure to consider the openness of the rooms. Hamptons style is all about feeling breezy and spacious which is something to think about when it comes to the ceiling heights and the amount of furniture in the room. In this case, less is truly more to get that airy feeling. Instead of filling your home with a bunch of small trinkets, opt for a few larger items like a standout table lamp, tall plants, and wooden chairs instead.

4. Fabrics

When it comes to fabrics, you’ll want to keep things as natural as possible. For upholstery, home decor, carpets, and blankets, try searching for fabrics sourced from natural materials such as wool, linen, leather, and cotton. All of these fabrics make your home feel connected to the seaside while allowing for an interesting pop of texture. Don’t be afraid to layer multiple fabrics to really bring it up a notch.

5. Lighting

Lighting is absolutely key when it comes to Hamptons style design. During the daytime, you’ll want most of your lighting to shine through big windows. This will add to the overall brightness and sunshine of the room. When the sun isn’t shining, try using soft bulbs in unique fixtures to emulate the look of sunshine. Incorporate a mixture of table lamps and floor lamps into your home to keep it bright all of the time. If you opt for overhead or wall fixtures, make sure to add in the option to dim the lights. This will keep it bright yet soft and warm when the sun goes down.

6. Furniture

The great thing about the Hamptons style is that you can show off a variety of new and vintage furniture pieces. Don’t forget to focus on materials that can be found in or sourced from nature such as wood, marble, and wicker. A bright, comfy couch is always a must-have in your living room as a way to welcome relaxation and conversation into your space. And when topped with patterned throw pillows, a white couch can no longer be boring! Many Hamptons style homes will also feature upholstered armchairs and wicker or rattan chairs to add to the nature-inspired design.

7. Home decor

As previously mentioned, your home decor is really where the colors, texture, and patterns can shine through in your Hamptons style home. Tall plants, floor to ceiling curtains, large mirrors, and the right lighting all play into the open space of the room. Don’t forget to focus on the details! Throw pillows and blankets, interesting vases, and bronze knick knacks all look great in a coastal-inspired home. Delftware is also HUGE in Hamptons style because of the classic blue and white design.
