Géo Martel Desvres Polychrome Delft-Style Antique Table Lamp – Thérèse
Meet Thérèse, an exceptional antique table lamp attributed to the early 20th-century workshop of Georges Martel (Géo Martel) in Desvres, c. 1900–1920. Bearing the pseudo-Delft “LF” mark and inspired by the 17th-century De Metaale Pot factory of Lambertus van Eenhoorn, this striking piece draws from the Delft revival tradition that flourished in Desvres during the early 1900s. While similar marks are sometimes misattributed to a so-called Louis Fourmaintraux factory, this specific style and mark align most closely with Martel’s refined and historically grounded interpretations of classic Delftware.
The ceramic base showcases a vibrant Dutch Delftware polychrome style—burnt orange, cobalt blue, olive green, and golden ochre—applied over a creamy background. Stylized birds, floral garlands, and scrolling foliage are rendered with precision and harmony, hallmarks of Martel’s atelier. Unlike the more eclectic, commercially driven compositions favored by earlier Desvres potteries, Martel’s work is noted for its reverence to historical sources and aesthetic restraint.
Topped with a new bespoke lampshade in herb green velvet, handmade in an atelier near Amsterdam, Thérèse strikes a balance between richness and subtlety. The soft matte velvet plays gently against the vibrant base, offering a contemporary textural contrast while enhancing the polychrome tones. The shade casts a warm, ambient glow, making this lamp ideal for a layered living space, a contemplative study, or an elegant bedside table.
Thérèse is more than a lamp—she is a statement of refined craftsmanship and layered history. As a unique table lamp and piece of functional art, she embodies the best of decorative table lamps: timeless, considered, and quietly striking. Her presence elevates any interior, offering not just light, but a meaningful connection to European ceramic heritage.

About the Maker
Desvres, a town in the Pas-de-Calais region of northern France, gained prominence for faience production in the 19th century. Georges Martel (signed Géo Martel) operated in Desvres from around 1900 to 1940, producing Delft-style faience of exceptional quality. His work closely echoed original Dutch forms and decorations, often incorporating imitation Delft marks to evoke lineage and elevate the credibility of each piece. This approach stood in contrast to the Fourmaintraux-Courquin factory, which embraced more hybridized styles and never attempted to replicate Delft signatures. Today, Martel’s ceramics are valued for their historical sensitivity, technical precision, and enduring aesthetic appeal.
