A one-of-a-kind pair of lamps, perfect for a living room or bedroom, Saskia & Serge have been lovingly handcrafted from unique, vintage, hand-painted vases in a Delft Chinoiserie style by Royal Tichelaar Makkum, the Netherlands’ oldest ceramic company, established in 1572. Paired with custom, contemporary lampshades in soft, sunny yellow satin—handmade in an atelier near Amsterdam—these table lampsbeautifully balance tradition and modern design.
The vases, which form the bases of the lamps, were handmade and hand-painted by different Royal Tichelaar Makkum’s master painters between 1940-60, as indicated by the markings on the bottom. Each vase features distinct garden scenes, each featuring a single bird and a unique arrangement of flowers. The three panels on each vase showcase similar floral motifs, such as peonies and chrysanthemums, but subtle variations in color and composition reveal the individual touch of the master painters. Each bird, carefully detailed, stands as a unique centerpiece within the scenes, allowing the distinct character of the painter to shine through.
These vivid garden scenes are framed by intricate blue patterns, inspired by swirling motifs found in traditional Chinese porcelain—a clear influence on Delft ceramics. This fusion of Eastern and Western artistic traditions in this Chinoiserie style, reflects the rich cultural exchange that shaped these pieces, resulting in vintage tablelamps that are both historically significant and visually striking.
