Zaida's base is an albarello — the tall, waisted cylindrical jar form that travelled from the Islamic world into Spanish and Italian pharmacy ceramics — here covered edge to edge in dense interlacing arabesque. The decoration is painted freehand throughout in the Nasrid style that once covered the palace walls of the Alhambra: deep turquoise and teal, cobalt blue, and saffron yellow set against a crackled white glaze. The base is signed by the workshop.
The new saffron raw silk shade, trimmed with Houlès passementerie, takes its cue from the yellow in the painting rather than cooling it down — a warm, Spanish counterpoint that lets the turquoise and cobalt read all the more vividly beneath it.
About Cerámica Al Yarrar
Cerámica Al Yarrar is a family workshop in the Albaicín, the old Moorish quarter of Granada, devoted to reviving the ceramics of Al-Andalus. Using the traditional majolica double-firing technique, the workshop reproduces Andalusian, Nasrid, and Caliphal designs drawn from pieces of the tenth to fifteenth centuries. Its hand-painted green, blue, and manganese wares continue a long Granada tradition, and the workshop is recognized among the city's notable traditional ceramicists.
