Art Deco Charles Catteau Pineapple Antique Table Lamp with Pleated Ikat Lampshade – Piña
Meet Piña — a one-of-a-kind table lamp transformed from a rare antique Art Deco vase designed by Charles Catteau for Boch Frères Keramis (Model 1118, c. 1920–1930). Meticulously handcrafted, Piña preserves the sculptural integrity of this iconic “pineapple” form while reimagining it as a sophisticated piece of functional art. The lamp is paired with a bespoke, hand-pleated lampshade in an artisanal green Ikat cotton-silk—woven and dyed by hand on traditional Uzbek looms—and finished with a coordinating green fabric cord. Elegant yet quietly expressive, this unique table lamp is a refined example of handcrafted lighting with deep historical roots.
The vase base, known as Model 1118, embodies Charles Catteau’s bold Art Deco vocabulary. Its bulbous, ovoid form features a deeply incised geometric relief that evokes stylized natural forms—an abstracted homage to the pineapple’s layered texture. Rendered in an ivory craquelure glaze, the ceramic surface adds luminous depth. Produced by the acclaimed Boch Frères Keramis in La Louvière, Belgium between 1920 and 1930, this piece speaks to a moment of dynamic experimentation in European design. Catteau’s legacy—marked by rhythmic surface decoration, daring form, and technical innovation—is clearly visible in every contour of this collectible vase.
Piña is paired with a custom shade in handwoven silk-cotton Ikat, rendered in a crisp green and ivory palette. The shade’s painterly pattern and softly gathered pleats echo the rhythm of the vase beneath it, creating a harmonious interplay of texture and tone. Together, the sculptural base and expressive textile form a decorative table lamp that feels both grounded in history and effortlessly contemporary.
Symbolizing warmth and welcome, the pineapple has long held cultural significance—from colonial expressions of hospitality to modern emblems of generosity. Piña carries this heritage into the present, offering not just light, but narrative. A statement piece in any refined interior, it is equally suited as a living room lamp, bedroom lamp, or artful accent in an entranceway—one of those truly collectible table lamps that transforms a space through presence and story.

About the Maker
“Boch Frères Keramis was founded in 1841 by Eugène and Victor Boch and their brother-in-law, Jean-Baptiste Nothomb, in La Louviere, Belgium. Decades later in 1906, French ceramicist Charles Catteau joined the company as artistic director, a position he held for 42 years. His signature Art Deco designs were influenced by Japonisme, Cubism, and abstraction of nature, and he was ultimately responsible for the company’s transition from producing utilitarian objects to esteemed works of art. Boch Frères Keramis closed down in 1985, and though they were acquired by other companies afterward, they closed permanently in 2009.” —from Artnet
