Boch Frères Keramis, founded in 1841 by Eugène and Victor Boch in La Louvière, Belgium, became renowned for its high-quality faience and decorative ceramics. In the late 19th century, Victor Boch established “la Chambre des peintres hollandais,” inviting skilled Dutch painters from Maastricht to join the workshop, merging traditional Dutch faience techniques with innovative Belgian craftsmanship. This collaboration brought new styles and decorative details to the Boch Frères collection, setting their work apart.
In 1958, the Dutch ceramic company Petrus Regout & Co. merged with Société Céramique to form Royal Sphinx in Maastricht, Netherlands. When Royal Sphinx ceased its Delftware production in 1969, Boch Frères Keramis acquired their designs and continued to produce these Delft-inspired pieces under the mark “Made for Royal Sphinx by Boch” until 1979. The unique transfer print method used, along with additional hand-painted details, allowed for intricate designs, like the dark, vibrant Delft blue so distinct to Royal Sphinx pieces.
Royal Boch pieces from this era reflect a blend of Dutch and Belgian ceramic traditions and remain cherished for their historical significance and decorative appeal.
