About Boch Frères Keramis and Charles Catteau
Boch Frères Keramis was a celebrated Belgian ceramics manufacturer based in La Louvière, rooted in a family tradition of faience production dating back to the 19th century. Under the leadership of Charles Catteau — appointed head of the decoration department in 1907 — the factory became a creative force in early 20th-century ceramics. During his long tenure, Catteau guided the development of hundreds of original designs that blended influences from Islamic art, Japonisme, Cubism, and modern ornamentation, earning recognition for their innovation and distinctively expressive style. From the 1920s onward, the department Catteau led was widely known as the Atelier de Fantaisie, producing richly decorated vessels and ceramic art associated with the Art Deco movement. Catteau’s work for Boch Frères Keramis remains highly regarded by collectors and historians for its artistic breadth and technical experimentation.
