The decoration is Teruel's loza verdimorada — green and manganese painted over a white tin glaze — a palette whose roots run back to the medieval potteries of Aragón. A central roundel holds a pair of stylised birds facing one another. Around them, bold interlacing bands divide the body into triangular compartments filled with cross-hatched pyramids, teardrop fillers and small heraldic shields, one of which encloses a stylised animal. A striped collar and a frieze of foliate lozenges band the shoulder above.
The form is wheel-thrown. It swells through the body, steps up to a domed, knopped top, and stands on a turned foot that leaves the dark Teruel clay exposed. The underside is marked by hand with a painted Punter signature. Every piece in this tradition is thrown and painted individually, so no two exist alike.
About Punter Ceramics
For five generations the Punter family of Teruel has carried forward one of Spain's most distinctive ceramic traditions: the loza verde y manganeso of Mudéjar Spain, green and manganese over a white tin glaze, which flourished in Aragón from the fourteenth century onward. Under Domingo Punter Loscos, born in 1936, the style found a freer and more modern hand — birds, hares, heraldic shields, towers and geometric strapwork drawn from the medieval Mudéjar towers of Teruel itself, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site. The fifth generation still throws, glazes and paints every piece in the town.
