Punter Teruel Mudéjar Revival Vintage Table Lamp – Verdejo

€1,290.00

Meet Verdejo, part of our new Spanish lamp collection! Verdejo is a one-of-a-kind table lamp crafted from a vintage Punter vase in a classic baluster form, rooted in the celebrated ceramic traditions of Teruel, Aragón. The Punter workshop, renowned across five generations, played a central role in the 20th-century revival of Mudéjar-inspired ceramics, translating medieval motifs into a vivid, modern painterly language.

The wheel-thrown base swells into a rounded body before narrowing at the shoulder and rising to a tall neck, finished in a creamy white tin glaze. Over this ground, the surface is hand-painted in the signature loza verdimorada palette of green and manganese-black. This chromatic vocabulary, the hallmark of Teruel ceramics, traces directly to the medieval Mudéjar traditions of Aragón, whose ceramic decoration once adorned both tableware and the city’s glazed towers.

Across its framed compartments appear a sequence of motifs: a heraldic lion, a stylized bird, and geometric devices in bold black linework. The lower register is encircled by a rhythmic frieze of pinecone medallions, a symbol of vitality and abundance. Painted freehand, these motifs exemplify the revival style pioneered by Domingo Punter and his contemporaries, who reinterpreted medieval designs with expressive modern energy. The base reveals reddish terracotta clay at the foot, inscribed with the bold mark “PUNTER,” affirming its authenticity as a product of this historic family workshop.

To complement the ceramic base, Verdejo is paired with a custom lampshade in a green, black, and white tweed weave recalling classic couture textiles. The fabric’s textured pattern echoes the tonal contrasts of the glaze, adding depth to the lamp’s profile. The shade is finished with a double-cord passementerie trim by Houlès, and when illuminated it casts a warm, inviting glow that enhances the lamp’s sculptural presence.

Height: 65 cm (26 in) with lampshade
Diameter: 46 cm (18 in) with lampshade

About Punter Ceramics

The Punter family has shaped ceramics in Teruel, Aragón for five generations, carrying forward one of Spain’s most distinctive traditions. Their work is rooted in the celebrated loza verdimorada style—green and manganese decoration over a white tin glaze—a palette that flourished from the 14th century under Mudéjar influence.

In the mid-20th century, Domingo Punter Loscos (b. 1936) became a leading figure in the revival of Teruel ceramics, reinterpreting medieval motifs with a freer, modern brush. His motifs—birds, heraldic heads, seed pods, and geometric strapwork—draw directly from Aragón’s medieval towers and tablewares, yet remain unmistakably expressive and contemporary.

Today, the fifth generation of the Punter workshop continues to hand-throw, glaze, and paint every piece in Teruel, preserving historic techniques while ensuring this medieval tradition remains vibrant, collectible, and alive in the present.
