In the late 1920s, Eelke Snel and Koen Mertens established a ceramics factory in Velsen-North, naming it 'Pottery Kennemerland'. Eelke Snel's journey began as an assistant in mould-making at the Amphora factory in Oegstgeest. Later, he worked at St. Lukas in Utrecht. On May 20, 1920, he joined forces with Koen Mertens, Jan van Ham, and Cees Muyens to launch a pottery named 'De vier paddelstoelen' (The Four Mushrooms). However, this venture was short-lived. By December of that year, Eelke and Koen initiated their own enterprise in Velsen. About four years into this venture, Eelke proceeded independently, aiming to create affordable yet beautiful pottery. He soon achieved this, as many craftsmen flocked to join the factory. Initially, the designs featured hand-painted squares set against cream and grey backgrounds. However, when designer Karl Gellings collaborated, the simplistic designs evolved, leaning more towards artistry. Over the years, the designs transitioned to more refined pieces. In 1943, amidst World War II, the Germans mandated the factory's relocation to Sassenheim, prompting a name change to 'Velsen'. Here, while they began with the old moulds, they soon innovated, crafting new forms of pottery, porcelain, and ceramics.
