Royal Delft White Vintage Table Lamp, House of Hackney Hollyhocks Lampshade – Alcea

Sale Price:€1,030.00 Original Price:€1,290.00
sale

Meet Alcea, a one-of-a-kind lamp lovingly handcrafted from a vintage Royal Delft (De Porceleyne Fles) White (Delfts Wit) vase. Named after the botanical genus for the hollyhock flower, this lamp pairs the classic vase base with a lampshade in the exquisite Hollyhocks—Spring fabric from British luxury brand, and proud B-Corp, House of Hackney. The fabric design, inspired by the lush color and cheerfulness of hollyhock blooms, evokes the luminous gardens depicted in Gustav Klimt's paintings. Created by American artist Kerry Simmons, this cotton-linen blend captures the pastoral purity and romance of the countryside, infused with a vibrant floral riot that embodies a spirited punk essence.

A delightful note: Hollyhocks are a common sight on the streets of Amsterdam, where it's tradition to plant them at home entrances, bringing a touch of nature's charm to the urban landscape.

The legacy of the lamp's base, the Royal Delft White, dates back to the 1930s. Amidst the economic challenges of the era and the impact of the Second World War, the once-thriving market for hand-painted Delftware transformed. The Delft White series, with its utilitarian yet artful designs, shifted focus from intricate paintings to the vase's unique silhouettes. By the late '60s, the collection boasted over 174 creatively shaped models. Production ceased in 1976, leaving only the iconic tulip vases in continuation of the Delfts Wit tradition.

De Porceleyne Fles, later given the distinction of Koninklijke or Royal, known now as Royal Delft, is a Dutch manufacturer of Delftware, or Delfts aardewerk, headquartered in Delft, the Netherlands. It is the only remaining ceramics factory out of 32 that were established in Delft during the 17th century. Founded in 1653, it has been active for over 360 years without interruption. Royal Delft is not only the oldest surviving producer of Delftware, but one that is highly respected for its artistry.
