Meet Lotus, a one-of-a-kind table lamp lovingly handcrafted by Amitābha Studio from a rare vintage Flora Gouda vase, produced during the short-lived Lotus series in 1977. Introduced at the twilight of Flora’s artisanal era, this decor marks one of the factory’s final hand-painted series before the shift to industrial production. Its striking inky blue glaze—often described as “inimitable”—sets the stage for a rhythmic frieze of ivory-toned abstract motifs. Hand-painted in expressive freehand brushstrokes, each piece in the Lotus series is subtly unique, capturing the expressive, modernist spirit of late 20th-century Dutch ceramics.
The vase base is paired with a custom lampshade handmade in an atelier near Amsterdam, crafted from Liberty Fabric’s limited-edition Marquess Garden Chesham Sateen in Lapis. This dense floral print revives a 1977 archival design, echoing the late Arts and Crafts revival style with a palette inspired by Delft and Persian ceramics. The cool blues and crisp white patterning echo the tones of the Lotus vase below, while the vibrant fabric introduces a textural and ornamental counterpoint.
Together, the vase base and lampshade fabric—both designed in 1977, though independently—form an unusually cohesive and richly layered lamp. The pairing celebrates two distinct craft heritages: Dutch plateel pottery and British textile design. With its saturated tones and ornamental silhouette, Lotus brings refined character to spaces that blend vintage and modern aesthetics. Ideal in a serene bedroom, a richly styled living room, or as a singular accent in a more eclectic interior, this lamp balances strong visual impact with quiet decorative grace.
The lamp is finished with a custom-cut brass top that echoes the shape of the vase, along with a matching blue cord that complements its rich palette. As with all our work, the vase has been preserved in its original form — the lamp was created without any alteration or damage. The final image shows Lotus alongside her sister lamp, Flora, also available for sale.

About the Maker:
Plateelbakkerij Flora was founded in 1945 in Gouda, the Netherlands, and became one of the country’s most forward-thinking ceramic factories during the mid-20th century. Known for bold glazes and innovative decor, Flora remained committed to hand-painted traditions well into the 1970s. The Lotus series, introduced briefly in 1977, is considered one of the company’s final artisanal achievements — combining modernist abstraction with the Dutch legacy of floral ornamentation. Each piece in the series was painted by hand, making no two exactly alike. By the 1990s, Flora had merged into Royal Goedewaagen, and the Lotus line now holds a special place as a collectible snapshot of Dutch ceramic history at a turning point in style and production.
